Fantasy and paranormal romance is one of my favorite genres. I love the combination of magic, dark or light, and romantic and sexy moments. And one of my favorite heroes is scarred, mysterious ones (well, I do like my chirpy, sassy ones, as well). Aaaand my favorite heroines are also struggling and powerful. So, when I read the synopsis of Firelight, I knew I wanted to read it.

It's about a young woman with the power of fire. Miranda is living with her ruined and not so caring father and prowls the street at night and steal to make a living. Lord Archer encounters her when he's on his way to murder her father for losing his cargo on a ship. A cargo he's been searching for for a long time. But he is instantly drawn to Miranda, only a teenager then and vows to make her his. A few years later they marry and their attraction is undeniable. But both of them are keeping secrets and someone is murdering Archer's long since friends. How old is Archer really, what did he do and why does he hide behind the mask?

Callihan does know how to write sexual tension. It's agonizing at times, but the reward is worth it. I liked their relationship and I liked the mystery and historical part of it all. I did wish to have more of the fantasy element included, though. We get some superhuman strength from Archer, but it isn't until the very end before we get some fire action from our dear heroine. The ending was also a bit anti-climatic, but I did like the awesomeness of Miranda. You go girl.

I do recommend this for anyone wanting to read a historical fantasy romance with high sexual tension, lots of talk about feelings and a mystery involving bad decisions and strange people. I will probably read the sequel, because I'm curious about Ian.
